The Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarization (CENCOD) has pioneered efforts at demilitarization in Nigeria through a three-tier conference on demilitarization sponsored by the Washington-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

It has not only foregrounded a national discourse on the concept of demilitarization, but has also produced a body of knowledge on issues of demilitarization contained in the centre's two publications: Thoughts in Demilitarization and Issues in Demilitarization .

Besides, in Nigeria, its leadership has been in the forefront of campaigns against military intervention in governance. It has also been acting in consultative capacity on issues of demilitarization and democracy. It organized a Two - Day International Conference on the 1999 Constitution and the National Question in Nigeria” with concrete recipes on the National Question in Nigeria. This was done with support from the Ford Foundation.

Also, the centre networks with key players in the civil societies of the West African sub-region. It established 2001 a network on demilitarization to monitor the levels of demilitarization in the West African sub-region at the instance of Ford Foundation. The centre is the publisher of the quarterly journal, "The Constitution".
